Print on metal? What?

What type of sheet metal would be good to print on? I have an illustrator (cartoonist) friend that wants to do a series printed on metal of some type. Knowing his topics, metal is an appropriate media. When I mentioned some options, he seems to like the idea of printing on a surface that can be distressed in some way..perhaps even rusted.

I come across a lot of sheet metal on my trips to the scrap yard but I know nothing about how ink adheres to different types of metal. I see a lot of:
* 18-gauge aluminum
* really thin aluminum that is used on some type of printing press
* copper - construction grade
* 22 gauge stainless steel
Most of the cold rolled steel I see is already rusted and probably hard to print on.
